American Attack on Venezuela Stokes Anxieties of Future Greenland Annexation.

Recent American military action in the South American nation and the seizure of its president have ignited unease regarding America's designs on Greenland. Members of the ex-president's base have allegedly set their sights on the strategically important island following the operations in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Messages and Official Outrage

Only a short time after the start of the Caracas operation, a well-known conservative podcaster, who is the spouse of a high-ranking White House adviser, shared a suggestive map. The graphic showed Greenland covered in the stars and stripes, with the single-word caption: "COMING."

This blatant threat to claim the mineral-rich land, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, triggered swift and firm condemnation from Danish representatives.

"We are strong partners and should continue to cooperate as such. US security is also Greenland’s and Denmark’s security," declared the Danish ambassador to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States collaborate to ensure security in the North."

The diplomat further highlighted that the kingdom had substantially increased its defence spending this year, earmarking a substantial sum specifically for Arctic and North Atlantic defence. "And yes, we expect complete respect for the sovereign borders of the our realm," he added.

Administrative Moves and Geopolitical Goals

The situation were additionally complicated by the previous naming of a Southern governor as a representative to Greenland. The governor had publicly expressed gratitude to the president, stating it was an "honour" to work in a volunteer capacity to "bring Greenland into the US."

After the military action in Venezuela, this envoy commended the president's actions, linking it to the wider "fight against narcotics."

Since returning to office, the US president has consistently alarmed European allies with his stated interest in Greenland. The territory is considered critically strategic for national security and potential mineral exploitation. It already hosts the northernmost US air base.

Leaving the Door Open to Force

In a notable television appearance, the president declined to rule out the resorting to military force to acquire Greenland. This stance comes amid growing great-power rivalry in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He described Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for global security."

Mounting Friction and Local Resistance

In reaction to this constant "rhetoric" of threats, Danish intelligence service took the extraordinary step last month of labelling the United States as a "security risk."

The leaders of both Greenland issued a unified and forceful rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not take over other countries."

Surveys in Greenland reveals a nuanced sentiment. While a overwhelming percentage of the territory's residents seek independence from Copenhagen, there is simultaneously little to no desire to become part of the United States. The island has had the option to seek sovereignty for many years.

Expert Assessment: A Credible Scenario?

Military analysts are increasingly re-evaluating the possibility of such a move. One thinktank analyst specializing in defence admitted she had once dismissed the rhetoric but was "now not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to deploy a few hundred or a few thousand troops inside of Greenland, and it's not clear to me who could do anything about it," she concluded.
