Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
