From Praise to Fury: Conservative Reaction to Epstein File Release is Mixed.

Conservative reactions to the limited release of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.

Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric

Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the censorship procedure.

Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections

While Trump's identity and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt significant questions about the information may be concealed behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater openness.

“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a future legislature may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s document release grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.

Some Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release

However, a segment of conservative pundits and Trump allies swung firmly behind the administration.

The release—originating from a justice department run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and many of the men shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.

But a few do not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, allowed certain rightwing figures to launch the offensive.

“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Former President Campaign Releases Statement

Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing those files for months only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.

Broader Conservative Comment Seems Subdued

However, broader discourse on the political right was relatively subdued after the release, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to enact a bill requiring the files' publication.

Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy folders of files that included no previously unseen data.
