Sheffield Wednesday Faces Major Issues, Says New Football Authority

'Our role is integral to football's future' - newly appointed regulator the new chairman

Sheffield Wednesday's persistent issues represent a a "major concern" and the football regulator is seeking powers to examine team situations in such situations, its new chair the regulator has stated.

In a wide-ranging interview, the regulator, who was appointed on Monday, voiced concern towards Wednesday's fanbase.

The chairman convened with four supporter groups associated with the football team recently.

The football club have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in 2025, with the club delaying salary disbursements on five separate occasions, including in last month.

"Obviously the club has become a serious issue for football authorities and a major challenge for the sport," Kogan told.

"The club represents one of the historic institutions for English football and this week we have met fan representatives.

"We are seeking authority... which will enable us to take Sheffield Wednesday - and other clubs referred to us if they warrant scrutiny and acted upon."

Monetary Issues and Ownership Situation

The team's struggling chairman Dejphon Chansiri stated during the off-season he would be open to selling the club at their home ground, but he has been unable to finalize an agreement with potential new owners.

Missed wage deadlines on time in spring months resulted in restrictions being imposed by the English Football League (EFL) in June, stopping Wednesday from completing any player acquisitions for the next three transfer windows, although those limitations were removed in late summer.

Authority's Position

Kogan said: "The position was created for the fans of Sheffield Wednesday, teams facing challenges where people are committed to a community organization that has represented their community in multiple situations.

"I have absolute sympathy for the club's situation, as I do for every team that over recent decades have faced collapse, or been close to going to the wall, for factors unrelated to the supporters."

Questioned about whether the oversight body could require an owner to sell a club if they are judged inappropriate, Kogan said: "Should the inquiry concern 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the response would be once we assemble the facts and understand the situation, we will."

But the chairman emphasized that compelling proprietors to divest clubs would be viewed as the ultimate measure and the regulator would prefer to work with them.

"The last thing what we want to do is start getting involved with an individual club, an individual owner, without being able to work with that owner to try and resolve the issues that the club's facing and the proprietor's dealing with," the chairman stated.

"However, realistically, when you examine the past of football, over the recent generations there have been particular chairmen, not many, but particular people who have shown negligence in the way which they've been managing their organizations and finally don't wish to take responsibility for the coming years."

'Mistakes could erase significant advances'

The chairman convened with delegates from multiple organizations to detail the scope of the authority recently and insisted it was a "progressive gathering" with a "substantial involvement" from the National League to the Premier League.

"It's a job that's actually really important, because if we get it wrong, if the sport makes errors, the extraordinary progress that's been made necessary will vanish incredibly quickly," the chairman stated.

"And that's what nobody wants in the realm of domestic football is a major achievement - we must maintain momentum.

"Substantial financial resources entering the sport and has been invested for the recent generations, because certainty is lacking it will continue to come into football, which is part of the rationale behind I think we have to maintain a focused outlook on risk and of course, of the coming seasons."

Premier League Concerns

Elite division representatives objected to the formation of an authority because of concerns about detrimental effects on the top-flight's competitiveness, but the chairman responded: "I fully support the achievement and development as an commercial operation of the top division.

"As someone who appreciates the apprehension regarding damaging the division as a high-quality offering of this country. But concurrently, if you engage with division representatives after this week's discussion, they would have had a high level of reassurance -and, in fact, they have been advising us privately they have a considerable comfort."

Partisan Associations

The chairman continues to confront a "full inquiry" by the public appointments commissioner after he disclosed making donations to the political party in the past.

The 68-year-old provided financial support for Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Lisa Nandy's leadership campaign, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I have been entirely transparent regarding my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that party membership ceased the day the official body endorsed my nomination," the chairman stated.

"I currently have no participation in any sort of politics."
