Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these treatments should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the way of the injections explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
