Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge specific calls from the official, following the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
